Project description

The main objective of the project is to improve genomic selection in dairy cattle using genomic multi-trait models to predict breeding values. Currently, genomic prediction is performed using single-trait models. However, the accuracy of genomic evaluation can be increased by using multi-trait models. We will do this by developing and validating models that optimize the use of information from correlated traits. The models will take it into account that the correlations between two traits are different at different positions in the genome, some genes affects both traits, while others will only affect one. We will focus on improving the models for female fertility, mastitis and protein yield. The method, however, can be used in other contexts, and may become essential for new traits that are recorded only on a subset of the animals. It is expected that the results of this project will improve genomic selection significantly, lead to great benefits of milk production and the environment.
